Tell us about yourself, your family (if you’d like), and where you originate:

I’m a mom of 4 ages 9-3. My childrens names are Isis, Athena, Thayden and Korbin. I’ve been happily married for almost 10 years. We are both from the Visalia area but moved away in 2005. We then settled back here in October of 2011 after my husband served 7 years in the US Navy.

Describe your business/services:

My business provides a great variety of services to the area. I offer many different types of photography but my main focus is Birth and Newborns. I also provide birth and postpartum doula care as well as placenta encapsulation for those that are interested. I’ve encapsulated over 2 dozen placentas and love being able to offer this to our area.

What is a typical working day like for you?

It really varies some days I’m super busy and other times its very slow. Its a unpredictable business that’s for sure.

What inspired you to start in this line of work?

The birth of my 4th child really sparked a passion for birth and photography.

Did you have any hesitations or fears before starting? If so, what has helped you along the way?

I think I had the fear of not being able to start a business and of course the fear of the unknown! Surrounding myself with other birth workers has been a huge help for me.

What is a fun fact about you? Something most people don’t know?

I was a dancer for over 10 years and danced competitively for 6! Dancing is a huge passion of mine almost bigger than birth! My beautiful daughters are now passionate dancers as well and I am enjoying being on the other side of things.

What made you decide to join VBN?

It was a no brainer decision for me! The area badly needed resources for birthing families and when Avira asked other local doulas if they would be interested in helping I immediately jumped at the opportunity.

What changes (in the realm of pregnancy/birth) would you like to see come to fruition in our area?

I would love to see our area become more open to VBAC’s! I see so many mothers that badly desire a vaginal birth but feel pressured or forced into having another cesarean birth. The fight to have a VBAC in this area is something that badly needs to change. I hope that over the next couple years things start improving.

What is something (tip, info, advice) that you wish EVERYONE knew?

I think all the births I’ve been involved in are amazing heartwarming stories but I think the most amazing inspiring story related to the VBN was hosting the first every Visalia BOLD Red Tent! It was an amazing spiritual experience and I loved being able to be a part of putting it together.

What are your personal and/or professional goals?

My goals are to pursue a career in midwifery! I’m looking forward to starting this path when my children are all in school.

Do any previous VBN meetings/events stand out to you that you especially enjoyed? Why? What is your hope/vision for the future of VBN?

The Big Latch on and BOLD Red Tent are my 2 favorite events and I look forward to them each and every year! My hope for the VBN in the future is to become a well utilized tool for all families in the area. To spread the word to locals about the amazing meetings and events we hold to help the community!
